Recommendation
Heating, Water and Cooling Systems
- Have furnace serviced by a qualified technician. Service yearly for an
oil furnace; every two years for a gas furnace.
- Check and replace furnace air filters.
- Check furnace fan and belts for wear, looseness.
- Clean furnace fan blades vacuum inside ducts on forced air furnaces.
- Clean furnace humidifier.
- Vacuum electric baseboard heaters or inside ducts on a forced air
system to remove dust.
- Clean filters and core on the heat recovery ventilator.
- Drain sediment from hot water heater using the clean-out valve.
- Check sump pump and line for obstructions or leaks.
- Cover the outside of air conditioning units.
- Check septic tanks for sludge and scum. Tanks should be pumped
out once every three years.
- If you are on a well, quality-test the water for bacteria.
Windows and Doors
- Replace screens with storm windows/doors.
- Check doors, windows and skylights for leaks; seal where
necessary. Repair broken or cracked panes.
- Check and replace weather stripping where needed.
- Check locks and oil key slots.
Gutters and Roof
- Clean leaves from gutters and roof; test down spouts for proper
drainage.
- Check chimneys for obstructions.
Lawn and Garden
- Drain and store outdoor hoses.
- Store outdoor furniture.
- Clean and protect gardens; protect young trees and bushes in cold
zones.
